Students of the Obuasi Senior Technical School (STS) and Al Azhariya Senior High School (SHS) at Tafo, in Kumasi, clashed at Ashanti Regional Supper Zonal Athletics Competition, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday.
The riot resulted in the destruction of seats at the stadium as students of both schools used them as missiles, resulting in various degrees of injuries on some of them.
It all started when a male student of Obuasi STS, allegedly slapped a female student of Al Azhariya SHS, and some male students of Al Azhariya retaliated.
Eyewitnesses told the Ghanaian Times the fight escalated to the stands at the Amakom end of the stadium, as students of both schools engaged in a free for all fight, which marred the beauty of the competition.
It took the intervention of the police and military to bring the situation under control.
The Ghanaian Times gathered that a female student of the Al Azhariya SHS was taken to the hospital after she collapsed.
