Stop mounting pressure on Mahama to choose running mate – James Gunu

James Gunu, the Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cautioned agitating youth in the region to stop mounting pressure on the party’s flag bearer, former President John Mahama to choose his running mate from the Volta Region for the December polls.

He stated that the move was a way of setting a ‘trap’ for the former president, which was dangerous and uncharacteristic of a social democratic party, in as much as he respected the views of the group, the call was unnecessary.

“Article 43 of our party’s constitution is clear on the choice of a vice presidential candidate, I urge our party folks, especially those who are pushing for selection of person from the Volta Region to remain calm and afford our former president and flag bearer the opportunity to select a suitable person irrespective of tribe, religion, creed and gender.

“There are good reasons why the party’s constitution is crafted this way, I appeal to the groups to have confidence in our former president and flagbearer and remain solidly behind him to select a candidate that will assist and support him to secure massive victory in the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

“It is necessary that party members prepare to accept and be ready to work with whoever is chosen irrespective of where he or she hails from, in order to forestall unity and cohesion going into the general election because youth groups in the region should rather be concerned with activities of Western Togoland campaigners, new voters’ register and attempts to break fronts of traditional authority as key factors that can cause high voter apathy in the 2020 elections.

“All these are well designed and calculated strategies by our opponents to destabilise the NDC in the region, we must remain focused and united to rescue the country from destruction with barely nine months to go to the polls, our flagbearer and former president is yet to announce his running mate though there have been reports on possible choices,” Mr Gunu pointed out. -starrfmonline.com
