Spain to begin direct flights to Ghana

Plans are underway for the beginning of direct flights from Ghana to Spain and vice versa, Minister for Aviation, Mr Joseph Kofi Adda has revealed.

He said the move formed parts of efforts by government to make Ghana, West Africa’s Aviation hub to attract more travellers.

The minister made the disclosure when the Spanish Ambassador, Ms Alicia Rico paid a courtesy call on him yesterday.

He said Spain was the closest country to the African continent adding that the total flight duration from Ghana to Spain was less than four hours.

The minister however called for a reduction in air fares in Africa as the current prices were costly.

Mr Adda commended the Spanish government for relating well with Ghana by supporting the country with several projects including the acquisition of technical equipment for the Air Traffic Control Systems and other solar projects.

He revealed that Spain had also submitted a proposal to his outfit for the establishment of Maintenance Repair Overhaul (MRO) credit facility with “reasonable terms” which needed approval by the Ministry of Finance before submitting to cabinet.

He assured that once the loan is approved, work would begin immediately.

“Spain has also shown its readiness to help us secure some funds for the training of pilots and other cabin crew members,” he added.

The reiterated that Ghana’s quest of becoming West Africa’s aviation hub was on course, adding that government would continue to put measures in place to make the aviation sector an attractive one and make it a destination choice for every traveller.

The ambassador, in her remarks, said Spain was ready to collaborate with Ghana to promote development in the aviation sector.

“We value our relationship with Ghana and will continue to offer every support we can to harness our bilateral relationship,” she added.

Ms Rico also expressed gratitude to the sector ministry for their support during the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s 40th general assemble meeting.
