Three Assembly members of the Shama District Assembly and a resident have secured an injunction from the Sekondi High Court to stop an exercise to confirm Ebenezer Dadzie, the president’s District Chief Executive nominee for the area.
The three assembly members and the resident were Alpha Wonkye of Supom-Dunkwa Electoral Area, Isaac Adane of Beposo Electoral Area, David Nelson of Asokwo Electoral Area and Joshua Anaman respectively.
The voting exercise was scheduled for October 13, 2021 which is the second time the nominee is attempting to get assembly members to confirm his nomination when on October 5, 2021, they rejected Mr Dadzie as he failed to obtain 50 per cent of the total 25 votes cast.
The nominee only secured 12 yes votes out of a total of 25 votes cast, with 11 no votes, while two were rejected.
Rose Nyamah, the Shama Electoral Officer, who supervised the first confirmation exercise, stated that the president’s nominee could not stand for another confirmation vote unless the president renominated him.
However, the Shama District Assembly has summoned the assembly members in writing to attend another meeting to confirm the nominee, thus prompting the injunction.
Mr Adane, the Assembly member for Beposo Electoral Area, said they only went to court to halt the second confirmation vote and seek an interpretation of regulation hence seeking interpretation of Standing Order 15, which states if nominee did not get 50 per cent of votes, unless the president renominates him again, he cannot stand for another confirmation vote.
“The Shama District Assembly led by the Presiding Member has summoned us with a letter to a meeting for another voting to confirmation the nominee and based on the letter, we had to go to court for interpretation of the law by restraining the assembly from conducting the election until the determination of the suit,” Mr Adane disclosed.
He intimated that the Plaintiffs were seeking an order purported reconfirmation of MrDadzie by the assembly was invalid and perpetual injunction restraining Defendants from reconfirming him without renomination by the president.
According to Mr Adane, although four out of the eight government appointees were changed on Tuesday before first confirmation vote, they have picked up information the assembly intended to sack and replace the eight government appointees including four sworn in before the planned voting on October 13. –citinewsroom.com
