Sexual, gender based violence workshop ends at Sogakope

A two-day sensitisation programme on sexual, gender based-violence organised for journalists in the Volta and Oti regions ended last Friday at Sogakope.

The programme was organised by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to sensitise journalists on how to report on sexual violence cases.

It attracted 23 journalists who were also educated on the preventive measures to take to avoid contracting COVID-19.

The participants were taken through the constitution and other legally provided sexual rights of women and girls, effects of sexual violence and legal implications.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Mercy Wilson Brown, the Volta and Oti Regional Co-ordinator for DOVVSU said reporting on sexual violence was crucial hence it was important to sensitise journalists on reporting on these cases.

She urged the journalists to avoid using abusive languages in reporting on such cases.

“Let us rethink how we report these issues,” she added.

The regional coordinator said the media plays an important role in the community therefore reporting unethically would have an  effect on victims and the society as well.

Mrs Brown further advised that traditional rulers should be abreast with the constitution and other laws

She mentioned that customary practices which were dehumanising were against the law, saying that persons practising these customs will be arrested and dealt with.

Mrs Brown encouraged the public to study the constitution to be able to identify offences and report to the police.
