The Minister of The Interior, Mr Ambrose Dery, has tasked security services operating along the country’s borders to collaborate with residents, to curb cross border crimes.
He said residents of communities in border areas had useful and tangible information, which when tapped could help the security services in their bid to halt criminal activities at the border
Mr Dery made the call when he interacted with security services at Hamile, in the Lambussie District of the Upper West Region, and also visited some unapproved routes along Ghana and Burkina Faso border, last Friday.
“Looking at the nature of our borders, we cannot leave the work to the Immigration alone. There are a number of unapproved routes along the borders, and residents know them better”, he explained.
Mr Dery, who was rounding up his three-day working visit to the region, also interacted with residents of communities along unapproved route at Fielmuo, 15 kilometres from Hamile.
He urged them to be vigilant and support the agencies with useful information about suspected persons or activities.
The Comptroller General for the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi, who was part of the minister’s entourage, assured the personnel at the border that their hard work was being acknowledged.
It is recalled, that about six months ago, personnel from the GIS post at Hamile led by the Sector Command, Mr Felix Agyeman Bosompem, intercepted 1, 950 bags of PFJ fertiliser at the Fielmuo unapproved route.
The officers involved were subsequently given recognition by the service and duly rewarded for refusing bribes offered them by the smugglers.
