Scramble for money at robbery scene : 7 grabbed

Seven persons suspected to be involved in the scramble for money, which was thrown away by  robbery suspects at Tema Community-One last Thursday, have been arrested by the Tema Regional Police Command.

The money, believed to be more than GH₵100, 000 and belonged to a Chinese robbery victim, was thrown away by suspected robbers when they realised the police were on their heels.

Those arrested are Richard Attoh, also known as (alias) Amartey, 30, Qaadir Bancey, 31 Awudu Mohammed alias Vuga, 36, Sulemana Bancey, 62, Kwesi Hanson Smith, 66, Kabul Akuaku, 53, and David Nartey Daniels, 30.

They all admitted in their caution statement to have taken part in the scramble and pocketed a total of GH₵2, 500.00.

Briefing journalists, the Acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Tema Regional Police Command, Chief Inspector Stella Dede Dzakpasu, said the suspects had been charged with stealing.

It would be recalled that, the Ghanaian Times in its April 24, 2020 edition published a story that the Tema Regional Police Command gunned down two suspected robbers, who had snatched about GH₵100, 000 from a Chinese business man, who had withdrawn money from the Tema branch of the Zenith Bank in Community-One.

According to the story, one of the robbers who was being pursued by the police threw the bag of money away upon realising that he was almost in the grips of the police, thereby scattering the contents on the streets in an attempt to escape.

Chief Insp Dzakpasu said the seven were among the many onlookers who scrambled for the money and failed to return them, leaving the victim with an amount of GH₵ 2,500 which was salvaged.

She said investigations were ongoing to retrieve the rest of the money for the victims.

Chief Insp Dzakpasu urged members of the public who witnessed the incident to provide information that would lead to the arrest and retrieval of the money.

She said persons with information could reach the police on 191, 18555 and 0244287775, and cautioned against the scrambling for money under such circumstances.
