Rotary Club, Wheelchair Foundation donates to disabled pupils in UWR

The Rotary Club of Wa in partnership with the Wheelchair Foundation based in the United States of America has donated 15 wheelchairs to school children with physical disabilities in six districts of the Upper West Region.

The districts namely; Wa West, Sissala West and Nadowli-Kaleo, Jirapa, Lawra and Wa municipalities. The gesture aimed at boosting mobility among the beneficiaries.

Speaking at a symbolic handing over ceremony at Jirapa on Tuesday, the president of the Club, Rotarian Gaeten Kala, said the group saw the need to provide support to physically challenged persons in society by soliciting from benevolent organisations and individuals for those who could not afford the wheel chairs.

“We want to use this gesture to encourage persons with disabilities, particularly children, to pursue their dreams without limitations, bearing in mind that their disabilities does not mean inabilities,” he said.

He explained that the aim of the Club was to bring together businesses and professional individuals who would pool resources to provide humanitarian services to the less privileged in society and also advance goodwill and peace around the world.

Mr Kala advised the children to take proper care of the wheelchairs to ensure that they lasted longer and served the purpose for which they were donated.

He also used the opportunity to appeal to benevolent individuals to support activities of the Club in order to expand its interventions, and expressed gratitude to the individuals who donated wheelchairs to the club to be distributed to the children.

A beneficiary from the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Regina Nawah, who spoke on behalf of her colleagues expressed gratitude to the Club and its partners for the support and called for more of such interventions from other benevolent bodies.

“The wheelchairs have come at the right time to solve our mobility challenges; we had to crawl on our limbs in order to move from one location to another,” she recounted.

The occasion was also used to honour the Regional Director of Water Aid, Dr Nashiru Mohammed, for his role in the procurement of the wheelchairs from the WheelChair Foundation.
