‘Rejection of existing ID card by EC legal’

Jacob Osei Yeboah, Independent presidential candidate in the last two elections, has insisted that the rejection of the existing voter Identification (ID) card by the Electoral Commission (EC) as a required document for the compilation of a new voters’ registration is legal.

He indicated that per the 1992 Constitution the decision by the commission was legal thus describing the argument by the Inter-Party Resistance Against the New Voter Register (IPRAN) as baseless and unwarranted.

Mr Yeboah, the co-founder of United Movement for Change (UMC), censured the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and IPRAN for protesting against the EC over its decision to reject the existing voter ID card for the impending new voters’ registration exercise and admonished the NDC and IPRAN to cease fire on misleading and confusing the citizenry.

“The EC’s decision to reject the existing voter ID card is legal as entrenched in the 1992 constitution and any attempt to include or accept the old voter ID card as a required document for the registration exercise will compromise the integrity of the register,” thus chided NDC’s leadership for “counterattacking the commission for delivering on its constitutional mandate.”

Mr Yeboah expressed fret over the Minority in Parliament for endorsing and passing into law the National Identification Authority (NIA) Act 950, which ruled out the voter’s ID card as a national identity card in 2017 and was livid over NDC’s unrelenting protest against the compilation of a new voters’ registration exercise.

“The party refused to implement issues discussed at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meetings, the protests and series of demonstrations staged by IPRAN is a grand scheme and political strategy to distract the EC and, as well, make the government unpopular by deceiving the citizenry from participating in the exercise should it be held.

“I caution the NDC leadership to help maintain peace in the country and as well desist from inciting the citizenry for civil disobedience because of EC’s resolution to compile a new voters’ register, I urge the party leadership to quickly make a U-turn and begin advocating and mobilising supporters, members and faithful to fully participate in the registration exercise instead of persistently “misleading” to disenfranchise them,” Mr Yeboah stressed. -3news.com
