Rangers pip Heart of Lions in DOL Volta derby

Debutants Volta Rangers recorded an all-important 1-0 victory over leaders Heart of Lions in their match day 19 Zone 3 Division One League (DOL) clash at the Ho Sports Stadium over the weekend.

Forward Salim Karim fetched the only goal in the 10th minute to halt the fine form of the former Premier League campaigners.

It was a ‘sweet’ revenge for Rangers who suffered the same fate in the first round at the Kpando Stadium.

Lions started well, making the first incursion as early as the fifth minute but the danger was cleared before Benson Kofi Yeboah missed narrowly minutes later.

Rangers broke the deadlock in the 10th minute through Salim Karim’s long drive into the top right corner.

The visitors kept pressing but missed another opportunity when Mustapha Yakubu’s header hit the woodwork in the 15th minute.

Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession with a couple of decent chances, Lions failed to find the back of the net and ended the first half with a goal down.

Back from recess, Rangers kept their composure to deny Lions the equaliser when Atsu Ayivi Malvine’s powerful strike hit the crossbar after 60 minutes of action.

The defeat notwithstanding, the Lions remained on top of the league with 44 points while Rangers movedup to ninth with 24 points.
