Raise more awareness about breast cancer – Kojo Soroh

Healthcare Practitioners and panelist of a forum on Breast Cancer have urged the public to take charge in raising more awareness about Breast Cancer.

According to them, early detection of breast cancer should be taken seriously as well as practicing a regular self-examination check.

The call was made in an online forum yesterday, as part of activities to mark the Breast Cancer Awareness Month which aims at educating the public and organising screenings for early detections.

The forum included Mr Kodjo Soroh, Dr Adewumi Alabi and Dr Joel Yarney and was organised by Pfizer Incorporated, an American multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology corporation.

The medical director, East and Anglo West Africa of Pfizer, Mr Kodjo Soroh, in his submission mentioned that, Oncology remained a key therapeutic field for Pfizer and was, however, working to deliver medical breakthroughs that had the potential to change patients’ lives across the region significantly.

“Pfizer has supported patients in the breast cancer community for more than 20 years and our goals are clearly powering more treatment options and more breakthroughs for everyone,” he said.

Another Consultant Clinical and Radiation Oncologist, NSIA-LUTH Cancer Centre, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Dr Adewumi Alabi stated that, the importance of clinical research in breast cancer care could not be overemphasised.

Explaining that, it was for such reasons forums were important as it allowed people share their best insights and findings that could support patients in winning the battle against cancer.

“Although there have been evidence-based updates and real-world data showing the efficacy of prescriptions in the management of HR+ HER2- mBC patients, breast cancer is still one of the deadliest diseases with a high prevalence in an area,” he said.

Dr Alabi further urged the public to take early detection seriously and help friends and families by encouraging regular self-examination.

“Healthcare practitioners are also encouraged to employ technologies in their respective approvals to have open conversations and support patients,” he advised.

On the part of the Director of National Centre for Radiotherapy Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Korle-bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Joel Yarney emphasised that although meaningful change for those living with breast cancer disease have been made, the work was still far from finished.

“It is crucial for patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer or even metastatic breast cancer to have the right information and expectations, also we have encouraged patients to have open conversations with their healthcare teams to understand how they can be supported,” he said.
