3 Quit managerial roles after FIFA World Cup failures

A total of three managers have resigned following their team’s exits from the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Argentine coach Gerardo Martino was the first to go after his Mexico side were eliminated from Group C on goal difference.

It was the first time El Tri had exited at the group stage since 1978.

They faced Saudi Arabia in the final match of the initial round and were leading 2-0 in the closing stages but needed one more to leapfrog Poland.

However, Salem Al Dawsari’s added-time strike ended any chance of qualification.

Roberto Martínez ended his six-year reign as Belgium manager after the country unexpectedly crashed out of Group F.

A goalless draw against Croatia confirmed the Red Devils fate as they could only manage victory against Canada while table-toppers sprung a surprise in defeating them 2-0.

The Spaniard led Belgium to their best World Cup finish of all time in 2018 as they came third overall.

He also took them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 before falling to eventual champions Italy.

Otto Addo was the last casualty following his Ghana side’s defeat to Uruguay which confirmed the country’s exit.

Addo was appointed as interim coach for the national team in February of this year and became the first Ghanaian manager to win a match at the World Cup after his team’s 3-2 victory over South Korea.

Despite this, a 3-2 loss to Portugal and 2-0 defeat to Uruguay left them a point away from qualification.

Ecuador’s Gustavo Alfaro is out of contract and is set to begin talks in an attempt to retain his post following a Group A exit while John Herdman is also due to speak with Canada for a contract extension. –Insidethegames.biz
