Prosperity has eluded citizenry-PPP

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has bemoaned that prosperity is currently eluding the majority of the citizenry through unsustainable policies, programmes and social interventions.

It asked the government to strive to give Ghanaians prosperity since the forebears were passionate about prosperity and the wellbeing of the people and fought for same and more than six decades of existence, sadly did not measure up to the living standards, hopes and aspiration of many of them.

“More than six decades of our existence as a nation unfortunately does not measure up to the living standards, hopes and aspirations of many Ghanaians and Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the man who toiled and led our country to independence will be sad to see the state of the country he sacrificed a lot for,” the party said.

In a statement signed and issued by Felix Mantey, Director of Communications, however, reminded the president and Members of Parliament (MPs) “if they have the prosperity and wellbeing of the people at heart, then they must take steps to amend the 1992 Constitution to prevent the Legislature from being part of the Executive.

It said a total separation of powers would empower parliament to scrutinise the Executive better, reduce corruption and deliver personal freedoms, rights, responsibilities, de-politicise prosecution by ensuring the Ministry of Justice is separated from the Office of the Attorney General.

The statement said while the nation could have a Minister of Justice as the government’s legal advisor and lawyer, there is the need for an independent prosecutor whose tenure of office was not necessarily linked to political office of the president but have independence to prosecute anyone without political considerations.

It said the government should ensure the election of Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives and all Assembly Members to make them transparent and accountable to the citizenry, growth and development-oriented in their actions and thinking.–kasapafmonline.com
