Prof. Kpessa-Whyte apologises to SC over unsavoury comments

Lecturer of the University of Ghana, Legon, Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte, has issued an unqualified apology to the Supreme Court for allegedly making derogatory remarks against it on social media.

Following a recent tweet on twitter referring to the Supreme Court in disparaging words, Prof. Kpessa-Whyte, has been cited for contempt for bringing the image of the court into disrepute, but before he appears before the court tomorrow, he apologised to the apex court in a statement issued in Accra last Thursday.

His comments came shortly after the Supreme Court ordered Parliament to remove the name of NDC Member of Parliament, James Gyakye Quayson, from its records due to procedural breaches during his nomination and election in 2020.

In the statement Prof. Kpessa-Whyte explained that he did not intend to denigrate the Supreme Court and had no reason to slander the court.

He acknowledged any pain or discomfort his tweets may have caused the Chief Justice, the Supreme Court, and the entire judiciary thereby retracting the tweet in question and praying the Court for forgiveness.

“Sincerely, the tweet was not done with the intent to scandalise or denigrate a revered institution such as the Supreme Court of Ghana for which I have tremendous amount of respect and admiration.

These are consequences I never intended, although I do accept responsibility that I could have exercised better judgment in my choice of words,” he stated.

“Please permit me to state unequivocally that I have no reason to slander our Supreme Court, and I hereby sincerely apologise unreservedly for any pain and discomfort my tweets may have caused,” Prof. Kpessa-Whyte added.
