An educational programme dubbed ‘Mindset Education concept’ has been inaugurated at the Nsawam Medium Prisons in the Eastern Region to help in the reformation of prisoners in the country.

The programme, initiated by the International Youth Fellowship (IYF), a non-governmental organisation in collaboration with the Ghana Prisons Service (GPS), is expected to groom the inmates to become useful citizens to their communities.

The Director of Welfare of the GPS, Director of Prisons (DOP) Leopold Kwame Amoah Ansah in his remarks appealed to the public not to abandon the inmates after serving their sentences, but assist re-integrate them into the society.

“If the public do not help in the reformation of inmates and their re-integration into the society they go back to the same crimes they  committed and the ripple effects would not  be beneficial.”

He said the programme would benefit the inmates through the education and transformation.

DOP Ansah commended the organisation for their initiative stating that it would help in the reformation of prisoners in the country and assured them of the Ghana Prisons Service’s continuous support.

The IYF Director of Police and Corrections, Dr Ki Sung Kim, said the inmates in the prisons were expected to be introduced to intensive mindset education  to  reform them to be useful to society.

He said the project would establish Bible colleges within prisons adding that, “Most inmates appear reformed whilst in the prison due to the structure and the environment but after serving their jail term and discharged they pursue crimes and go back to prison.”

The Eastern Regional Commander of Prisons, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Ernest Asante Adofo said the initiative would ensure the reformation and rehabilitation of the inmates.

He said the programme would also ensure their safe custody to enable them to live a self-supporting life and prevent them from re-offending after serving their sentence.
