‘Prioritise devt needs toward early completion’

The Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Emmanuel Otoo has admonished residents to prioritise their developmental needs to ensure that projects started are completed at the stipulated time by the contractors.

According to him, social audit is a way of measuring, understanding and improving organisations performance hence the need to work conscientiously to make the country a better place.

Mr Otoo made the admonition at an outreach programme for the chiefs and people of Fotobi, a suburb of Nsawam in the Eastern Region.

The programme, organised by the NCCE and sponsored by the European Union formed part of the commission’s Anti-Corruption, Rule of Law and Accountability Programme (ARAP), that sought to promote good governance by reducing corruption towards improving compliance with the rule of law.

On the theme: ‘Citizens for transparency and accountability’, the forum also sought to ensure compliance with the rule of law and to also empower the citizenry to demand accountability from duty bearers.

Mr Otoo stated that the close monitoring of development projects in the area would ensure that the community gets value for money, adding that “the scarce resources of the country cannot be used on shoddy work that is why residents must be part of the social audit system.”

Mr Otoo observed that the citizens’ participation in community projects would achieve good performance in all sectors of the economy since social audit based on the principle of local governance should be undertaken with the consent and understanding of all because it is a process and not an event.

“Social auditing creates an impact on governance since it values the voices of stakeholders including marginalised and pro-poor groups whose voices are rarely heard,” he added.
