President inaugurates River Birim bridge, 41 km Kwabeng – Asoum highway

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the weekend inaugurated the 45mm span bridge on the River Birim and the reconstructed 41km Kwabeng-Abomosu- Asuom highway in the Eastern Region. 

The reconstruction of the 41km Kwabeng-Abomosu-Asuom corridor was executed to a double bituminous surface in addition to the reinforced concrete bridge on the River Birim with 200m section across the bridge finished with asphaltic concrete layer.

Inaugurating the projects, President Akufo-Addo expressed his satisfaction with the work done and commended the contractor, Messrs First Sky Construction for finishing the project within the stipulated time.

Urging the company to keep up the good work, he assured Ghanaians to keep calm as all would have their fair share of the national cake.

Naa Koshie Lamptey, a bridge engineer with the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) noted that works on the 41km road project included provision of cross drainage structures of various sizes at low lying areas and water crossing points.

She said there was also the provision of road safety infrastructure to improve overall safety on the road; provision of u-drains in all the major towns along the corridor and trapezoidal drains at major cut sections along the road.

“Other works included the widening of the existing road to the standard 10.3m width including shoulders, improvement in the vertical and horizontal alignment to improve overall safety and provision of pavements with high quality materials to international specifications,” she added.

President Akufo-Addo who was on a three-day tour in the Eastern region also inspected works on the 33.2km New Abirem–Ofoase Kuma road, also being undertaken by Messrs First Sky Construction Limited, which is about 93 per cent complete.

Executive Chairman of the First Sky Group, Mr Eric Kutortse, assured the President that the project which commenced in May 2020 and was scheduled to be completed by May 2023 was well on course and would be delivered ahead of time.

President Akufo-Addo was in the company of the Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, officials from the Ministry of Roads and Highways (MRH), GHA, Department of Urban Roads (DUR), and Department of Feeder Roads (DFR).
