President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced plans by the government to review the country’s regulations on safety in the mining sector to reduce accidents in the industry.
The President’s comment follows a recent explosion at Appiatse in the Western Region that claimed 17 lives.
The accident occurred when a truck carrying explosives to a gold mine detonatedafter an accident with a tricycle, according to reports.
In a meeting with the Chief Executive of Goldfields Group, Chris Griffith, at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday, President Akufo-Addo said the incident would shape government’s regulations on safety in the mining sector.
He indicated that lessons would be learnt to prevent such an accident in future, adding that measures would also be taken “in the whole area of safety of mines and mining activities.”
President Akufo-Addo further indicated that the government would take measures to ensure that the nation got full value of its mining assets.
He pledged to continue the fight to bring sanity in the mining sector to reduce the impact of mining on the environment.
Mr Griffith, on his part, said his visit to Ghana was to meet the management team of Goldfields Ghana and interact with government officials in the industry.
He described Ghana as an important part of the business of Goldfield and pledged to work closely with players in the industry to restore the faith in the mining industry.
He expressed sympathies and condolences to the victims of the explosion at Appiatse.
