Preko: Referees can do better

Head Coach of Accra Great Olympics, Yaw Preko, has praised the level of refereeing in the ongoing betPawa Ghana Premier League, describing it as good.

That notwithstanding, the former Ghana international believes there is still a long way to go.

Yaw Preko, who guided his side to their sixth win of the season on Sunday against Karela United courtesy a lone goal struck by Prince Afrifa at the Accra Sports Stadium, stated in a post-match interview that “so far so good, but I believe the referees can do better.”

“What I have seen this season is that a lot of clubs are winning away; that is a good sign that things are getting better with officiating.”

“If my team Great Olympics is playing at home at the Accra Sports Stadium, it can go either way because the safety of teams are guaranteed and that brings out the best from all including the referees. That is the reason why teams come here, play well and beat us.”

He said teams must feel free to play away games in the best of atmospheres devoid of fans hostility or frustration from a referee to help the home team.

Preko stated that there are a few venues in the league where referees feel intimidated to give certain decisions to visiting teams.

“Eventually, the home teams are aided to win games. When such instances are weeded out completely, we’ll have a beautiful league to watch.”
