Power Queens, the female staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), have inaugurated a 10-seater water-closet facility for the Akropong School for the Blind in the Eastern Region.
The facility, provided with the support of the management of the company, comes with five urinal pots for the males section and hand washing sink for both sides, a standby electricity powered water reservoir to ensure uninterrupted flow of water.
The queens also presented to the school packets of toilet rolls, gallons of liquid soap, cartons of minerals, biscuits, and other confectioneries.
At the inaugural ceremony here at Akropong, Deputy Managing Director of the ECG, Kwadwo Ayensu Obeng, said the gesture was in line with electricity distributor’s corporate social responsibility.
According to him, the facility was not just a memorial for the 35th anniversary of the power queens but also to provide a more congenial environment for teaching and learning in the school.
President of the queens, Doreen-Carol Anning-Gyebi, explained that the project was born from the belief that “every individual, regardless of their background, deserves access to the basic necessities of life. It is the belief that underscores our shared humanity and the values we hold dear.”
Headmistress of the school, Madam Veronica Dery was appreciative of the facility and how it resolved the washroom challenge of school, especially students in the music section who had to walk long distance to the main campus to access the washroom.
She entreated other organisations and groups to emulate the gesture of the queens and support the school.
