Policeman arrested …for allegedly injuring 7 at installation of chief

The Suhum Police, on Saturday arrested a policeman for allegedly shooting into a crowd during the installation of Nana Ohene Fianko, with the stool name of Nana Amoako Darko, as Akyempimhene of the Suhum Traditional area, at Suhum, in the Eastern region.

Detective Sergeant Welbeck Agyina’s act allegedly injured John Offei, 26, Sandra Kwakye, 23, Roselyn Boateng, 32, Francis Ntow,27, Emmanuel Offei, 33, Kwadjo Darko, 50, and Godfred Owusu, 32,  and they were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital

Sandra Kwakye and Roselyn Boateng have been treated and discharged by the hospital, while John Offei and Kwadjo Darko were said to be in critical condition at the Eastern Regional Hospital, Koforidua, where they were referred for further treatment.

However, Emmanuel Offei, Francis Ntow and Godfred Owusu are still on admission at Suhum Government Hospital.

The suspect, who was also said to have suffered injuries in his right palm, was arrested and has been detained for interrogation shortly after he was discharged from the Suhum Government Hospital.

The locally manufactured gun which the policeman used in committing the act has been retrieved.

The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the incident to the Ghanaian Times.

He said the incident occurred at about 1:30 pm on Saturday, whilst the newly installed sub-chief was in his residence with his family and friends preparing for the durbar.

DSP Tetteh said, Sg Agyina, who is cousin to the newly installed sub-chief, was present at the installation.

The Police PRO said during the celebration, the suspect allegedly fired a pump action gun and injured seven people who were rushed to Suhum Government Hospital.

DSP Tetteh said the suspect who suffered injuries was disarmed and handed over to the police.

The Police PRO said the police went to the crime scene and retrieved an empty 70mm BB cartridge purported to have been discharged from the gun.

DSP Tetteh said that police visited the injured at the hospital and they were responding to treatment.

He said the situation at the traditional area was calm as the durbar continued despite the incident.

DSP Tetteh said the suspect has been detained to assist in investigation.
