Ashanti Regional Police Command is investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a married couple in their apartment at Maakro, in the Suame Municipality of Ashanti.
The body of the woman, Ernestina Jackson, was found in a decomposing state, with ice packs wrapped in a blanket on it.
The body of Samuel Jackson,48, the husband, was found by police in the bathroom, on the toilet.
Two children of the couple, aged 11 and 13, who were in an unconscious state were rescued by the police.
A police source at the Regional Command confirmed the incident, but would not give any details, but suspected the couple died about three months ago.
The Ghanaian Times gathered that the couple lived in a rented apartment, at Maakro, after relocating from the Netherlands, about seven years ago.
According to neighbours, the couple did not socialize with other residents, and the last time co-tenants saw them was somewhere in May, this year, when they returned home, parked their unregistered Ford Expedition car and climbed upstairs to their apartment.
Some neighbours became alarmed as they did not see the couple for a long time, and inform the police at Abuakwa about the situation.
Their two children, who were locked up in the two-bedroom apartment without food and water for days, were on admission at the Abuakwa Polyclinic.
Dr Mensah Manye, Superintendent at the Polyclinic, said the children were brought in “very weak and dehydrated. It was a long month of traumatisation in which from what I gathered from the police; they were locked up in a room for some months”.
The children have been referred to the Social Welfare Department, and Dr Manye has recommended psychotherapy support for them.
He said “the elderly one cannot still talk well. I don’t know if it is because of the trauma. Maybe some psychologist may come in to actually talk to them before, they can get out of that situation,” he advised.
