 Police Depot 1 JHS engage Dzorwulu Special School in Special Olympics

 Some pupils of the Police Depot 1 Junior High School, Tesano and Dzorwulu Spe­cial School yesterday engaged in sporting activities in Accra in games aimed at bridging the gap between abled and disabled children.

The event dubbed ‘special Olym­pics’ had activities such as football, lime-and-spoon, tug-of-war and health screening for all participating children.

It was organised by Junior Achievement (JA) Worldwide Gha­na and Prince’s Trust International (PTI) in partnership with Special Olympics Ghana to assist the chil­dren interact with each other.

It also sought to assist them change misconceptions and also break the cycle of discrimination against persons with disabilities.

Speaking to the media, the In­ternational Programmes Manager for PTI, Ms Jane Parker, said there was the need to break down the barriers between mainstream and special schools in order to promote inclusivity.

She said her outfit would contin­ue with soft skills training in Junior High School (JHSs) with a disability session for mainstream schools.

The Programme Lead, JA Ghana, Ms Lorreta Domfeh Owusu, said her outfit would train abled children on how to relate with those with special needs in order for them to understand each other.

She said it was the expectation of her outfit to collaborate with more schools in the near future to bridge the gap between the main stream schools and special schools in the country
