Police arrest 4 for possessing ‘wee’

The police have arrested four persons in separate operations for possessing dry leaves, suspected to be Indian hemp, at Techiman, in the Bono Region, and at Ayigbe town near Weija, in Accra.

A consignment made up of 165 compressed parcels, and six fully packed fertiliser sacks was intercepted by the police, reports Daniel Dzirasah.

Briefing the Ghanaian Times, Chief Supt Ohene-Boadi Bossman, Techiman Divisional Police Commander, mentioned Justice Yaw Yeboah, 28, Adama Zackaria, 32, and Augustine Nti, 29, as the suspects, who were arrested on the Techiman-Wenchi road around 9pm on Wednesday, September 26, 2019.

According to the police commander, the police had a tip-off and detailed a patrol team to arrest the suspects.

Chief Supt Ohene-Boadi said the ‘wee’ consignment was loaded in an Opel Astra taxi-cab with registration number AW 5040-13, which was led by an unregistered motorcycle, being ridden by Adama Zackaria.

The motorcyclist, according to the police, attempted to bribe the patrol team with an unspecified amount of money, but the officers rejected the offer and arrested him and two other suspects in the taxi cab.

In an interview with the Ghanaian Times, one of the suspects, Yaw Yeboah, said he received an offer of GH¢1,000 from a Takoradi-based businesswoman, whom he failed to name to transport the ‘goods,’ which were supposed to be rice from Nsawkaw to Techiman.

He revealed that the money was meant to bribe officers at the various barriers on the road.

Anita Nyarko-Yirenkyi reports that the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Fredrick Adu Anim told the Ghanaian Times in Accra yesterday that Comfort Ames, a trader, was reported to have concealed ‘wee’ in boxes at a kitchen store at her residence.

He said on September 21, the Weija police apprehended the suspect at her residence and a search revealed 110 slabs of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in her kitchen.

The police commander said during interrogation, she denied ownership and claimed her sister in-law by name Sarah Osinu, kept the drugs there, but could not lead the police to apprehend her.

DCOP Anim stated that Comfort had since been arraigned before the Weija Circuit Court and granted GH¢20,000 bail with two sureties.

He said Comfort would re-appear before the court on October 14, 2019, and stated that the exhibits would be sent to the forensic laboratory for analysis.
