PNC makes recommendations to save nation from economic challenges

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has submitted proposals to the government in finding solutions to the current economic challenges.

It urged the government to revamp operations of the Metro Mass Transit Limited and other public transport agencies within three months to minimise the rising cost of transportation within cities and offer free ride to school going children and the elderly.

“We recommend to the government to clamp down on pricing of items in dollars by enforcing the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723) and prices of goods and services are obviously being driven by unprecedented increases of petroleum prices exacerbated by the free fall of the Cedi should be checked,” the party said.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had asserted that the country was in crisis and there was the need to work together in finding lasting solutions to the quagmire the nation found itself as a sovereign nation.

In a statement signed and issued by Asana Nabla, the General Secretary of the PNC, it called for the need for all to work together in finding a way out of the challenges even though the economy was in recession.

It said the government’s initiative to import cheap petroleum products as a short–term measure to stabilise prices should take charge of importation and pricing of petroleum products to ensure prices were affordable by the ordinary Ghanaian.

“The government should not pay attention to the few individuals trying to thwart its efforts by saying it is impossible but hasting operationalisation of the Tema Oil Refinery and other refineries under construction to bring fuel prices under control.

“This is not going to be easy however, more proactive measures must be taken in planning to wean us off importation of products we can produce locally, regulate importation of rice and other essential products into the country and Buffer Stock Company must buy local rice from producers,” the statement said.

It said the call for the government to cut down on its appointees was justifiable and reduction of salary of appointee’s by 30 per cent was commendable to bring back credibility, confidence and trust it needs from the citizenry and appealed to them to remain resolute and be optimistic of getting out of difficult times.
