Players wage cuts not applicable in Ghana –Chibsah

Head of Public Relations of the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana’s (PFAG) Yussif Chibsah says he does not think slashing player salaries is applicable in Ghana football looking at the prevailing circumstances.

In the wake of the suspension of the Ghana Premier League due to the corona virus pandemic, clubs have requested players to welcome the discussion of pay cut to ease the financial burden.

Most European clubs have agreed on this initiative with their players and staff.

Some teams in Ghana have taken this into consideration but there has been a bone of contention as a result of low salaries of players.

According to Yusif Chibsah, players are underpaid in Ghana; moreover, data of clubs suggests that a number of clubs have failed in paying salaries of their players dating back to January.

“It’s not compulsory for players to take a pay cut. There should be a dialogue between the management and players and see the way forward,” he told footballmadeinghana.com

“Moreover our players in the local league are highly underpaid.

“The pay cut should not be a flat amount because each player has his own peculiar contract that comes with varying salary; their burdens are not the same too.

“But as far as I am concerned, that is not applicable in Ghana and I hope it will just remain at the discussion stage at such unofficial platforms. Our players are already suffering and thinking about taking pay will make them suffer the more,” he noted.
