A US-Based water purification equipment manufacturer, Pine Tree Filter Company, has donated 190 pairs of water purifiers worth more than $ 6,600 to victims of the recent spillage of the Akosombo and the Bui dams following the contamination of their source of drinking water as a result of the spillage.
The items were made possible through the company’s local affiliate, Shalom Indigenous Foundation (SIF), a charitable wing of the Madina Baptist Church in Accra.
Each of the water purifying gadgets filters about 1000 gallons of contaminated water says the President of SIF, Reverend Dr Noah T. Quarshie, during an interview with the Ghanaian Times in Accra on Thursday.
He was throwing more light about the SIF’s charity work particularly their assistance to alleviate the plight of the vulnerable across the country.
The water purification gadgets Rev. Dr Quarshie said were distributed to the victims at the two camps at Battor in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region and Yeji in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.
“After discussing the disaster with the water filter company, they were touched by the unhygienic state of sources of water for the communities devastated by the spillage with concerns of possible public health crises in the affected areas hence the gesture,” he said.
Rev. Dr Quarshie acknowledged the complementary role the company played in SIF’s efforts to mitigate the plights of victims of the spillage.
He disclosed that the SIF had donated assorted items worth GH¢ 20,000 to the three communities in the area, saying each of them received 1000 pairs of fairly used clothes, several packets of shaving sticks ,camping tents and a total of nine water purifiers.
According to him, SIF as a Christian-based organisation was equally concerned about meeting the physical needs of the people aside the spiritual.
Quoting from the scriptures (James 2:14-17), Rev. Dr Quarshie stated that “What good is it my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds, can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If someone says to them go in peace.
He said Christianity was not only theoretical but practical too, stressing “we are ministering to body and soul.”
The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who was on hand to receive the items in Battor (Camp 2), thanked the foundation for the gesture, while expressing his commitment to stand by his constituents in this challenging times.
