Petro de Luanda claim Wydad Casablanca win

Four of the five CAF Champions League matches ended in draws on Saturday, with just Petro de Luanda managing to pick up a win.

Mamelodi Sundowns held Al Merrikh to a goalless draw at the Al Salam Stadium on Saturday afternoon to retain top spot in Group A.

The Brazilians lead their group on four points, with the Chief picking up a point from their first outing in the competition, having not played last weekend due to Al Ahly’s participation at the Club World Cup.

In the first match of the day, Petro de Luanda recorded a 2-1 win over Wydad Casablanca at Estadio 11 de Novembro to go top of Group D.

Tiago Azulao gave the hosts from Angola a 41st minute lead, but Jalal Daoudi hit back for the Moroccan champions on 59 minutes. However, Tricolores came out on top courtesy of Yano’s 68-minute winner.

The Red Castle remain second in the group on three point, one behind Mateus Agostinho’s side.

Sagrada Esperanca played out to a 0-0 draw against Zamalek at the same venue a few hours later to claim their first point in Group D.

The Egyptian champions have now drawn their opening two games to sit third in the group on two points, two behind Petro de Luanda.

Elsewhere, Jwaneng Galaxy got off the mark in Group C following a 1-1 draw against Etoile du Sahel at the Francistown Stadium.

Galaxy needed a stoppage-time goal from Thabang Sesinyi to rescue a share of the spoils after Souleymane Coulibaly had given the Star a 14th-minute lead.

The Tunisian giants trail domestic rivals ES Tunis by two points in second position after drawing their opening two encounters.

Meanwhile, Esperance ST drew 1-1 with Chabab Belouizdad at Stade du 5 Juillet in the late kick-off as Zied Machmoum (82′) cancelled out Karim Aribi’s 15th-minute opener from the penalty spot for the hosts.
