Otchere-Darko slams claim pres’s electoral fortune tied to new voters’ register

Gabby Otchere-Darko, the founder of the Danquah Institute, has described as “bizarre” and “ludicrous” suggestion from some elements especially within the opposition that President Akufo-Addo’s electoral fate is tied to a new voters’ register.

He explained in a Facebook post that the decision by the two bodies, the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Identification Authority (NIA) to suspend registration until further notice was taken before the lockdown, and could not realise any reason whatsoever why that decision to suspend should change.

“The NPP won in 2016 with a voters’ register that we knew and was so certified as tainted with the EC setting out to change it against resistance but COVID-19 has its own plans,” Mr Otchere-Darko said.

He expressed the sentiment after some people including Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had stated that the lifting of the partial lockdown which was put in place to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus by the president was to allow the NIA and the EC to go on with the Ghana card and voters’ registration exercises respectively.

“Ghanaians should be more worried about the high energy the NDC is investing in protests to protect the tainted voters’ register than the EC seeking to change it for a better one, the NPP does not require a new voters’ register to win the December elections but rather believes a credible register would enhance the integrity of the polls.

“The NPP will be satisfied with whatever the EC, in its wisdom and the time available before the December elections, decides to do about the voters’ register, I do not see the EC putting a register ahead of the health and safety of Ghanaians.

“I know Mrs Jean Mensah well from her time at the Institute of Economic Affairs, my time as a civil society activist, and she is one of the most committed, dedicated determined, competent, sensible, objective and confident Ghanaian patriot I know, it is unfortunate but not strange for some elements to suggest that the president will tie his electoral fortune to a new voters’ register. Bizarre!” Mr Otchere-Darko posited. -classfmonline.com
