OSP findings on Labianca, GRA wholesome – GII

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has described the findings of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) involving Labianca Group of Companies and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) as not surprising and wholesome.

It noted that the citizenry were aware of what had been happening in the country and it was not surprising the OSP had come out with such findings and described it as wholesome and a step in the right direction.

“We are not surprised about the Special Prosecutor’s claim of alleged corrupt activities involving Labianca Group of Companies and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) because we are all in this country and we know what is happening, so is not surprising that the OSP comes out with those findings,” the GII stated.

Mary Awelana Addah, the Programmes Manager of GII, said the OSP findings were in the interest of the nation, wholesome, a step in the right direction and defended the office for the job done.

The OSP published an investigative report which revealed Labianca Group of Companies, a frozen foods company, owned by Eunice Asomah-Hinneh, a Member of the Council of State, had a shortfall in import duties in excess of GH¢1.074 million and alleged that she used her position as a Member of the Council of State and member of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to get a favourable decision from the Customs Division of GRA.

However, the Customs Division refuted the OSP’s claim against some of its officials in the case of Labianca Company, hence Colonel Kwadwo Damoah (Rtd), the Commissioner of Customs, who was indicted in the report accused the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, of malicious intent with the aim to discredit the Customs officers.

Mrs Addah, contended that the Special Prosecutor, who is a lawyer, works with a team of lawyers and they understand the law would not just come out with such findings with malicious intent, peddle falsehoods and make certain allegations to discredit the company and GRA officers.

“I am sure the Special Prosecutor who is a lawyer and working with a team of lawyers who understand the law will not just come out peddling falsehoods and making certain allegations which cannot stand the rigours of the law so, let us give him credence because he understands what he is doing.

“We must commend him for taking this bold step which is not surprising, wholesome, a step in the right direction but whoever does not agree knows where to go,” Mrs Addah said.
