Okaikwei North inaugurates Municipal Census Implementation Committee

The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) last Friday inaugurated an eight-member committee spearhead the implementation of this year’s census in the municipality.

The committee which is chaired by the municipal environmental and sanitation officer, Samuel Amoah, would also collaborate with the municipal technical team to ensure all members in the municipality are counted during the census.

The rest of the members are Charlotte Kwofie, Vivienne Achel, Joanna Arries-Tagoe, Cynthia Aboni, Frederick Ayipaala and Joel Dery, all from the ONMA, and Abeka Mantse, Nii Amar Noyaa I.

Speaking at the ceremony at Tesano, Accra, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Nii Boye Laryea, said the Population and Housing Census (PHC) was an indispensable tool required to ensure that good governance and democracy worked for all.

He said the census would help the municipality to plan and implement as well as monitor policies and programmes to improve the lot of the municipality.

Mr Laryea said the success of the census depended on the commitment they attached to the task given them, adding that “bad census was an affront and a disservice to the people since resources would be misallocated.”

According to Mr Laryea, the PHC data was critical and a vital source of statistics in the implementation of decentralisation programmes, which could not be underestimated.

He said the United Nations recommended that every nation should endeavour to undertake population census every ten years, and now was the time for every individual to be counted.

“I therefore have no doubt that the depth of knowledge and experience of the member of the Municipal Census Implementation Committee (MCIC) being inaugurated will provide the skills and competencies needed for the successful conduct of the census in the district and assure good quality results,” he said.

Mr Laryea urged members of the committee to work hard to ensure successful census in the municipality.

The chairman of the committee, Mr Amoah promised to work hard to ensure a trouble free census in the municipality.
