Okaikwei Central gets TVET centre

A Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centre sponsored by the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation (Turkish international Development Agency) was on Thursday inaugurated to provide skills training to young women in the Okaikwei Central Constituency in Accra.

The TVET centre is a renovated three classrooms equipped with 11 industrial sewing machines, 10 desktop computers and two printers.

It was jointly inaugurated by Member of Parliament (MP) for the Okaikwei Constituency, Patrick Yaw Boamah and the Turkish Ambassador to Ghana, Miss Özlem Ergün Ulueren.

Speaking at the inauguration, Miss Ulueren said women empowerment and technical and vocational training were vital to Turkey hence the importance of the new TVET centre to provide women with industry related skills that would increase development in the country.

“We attach high importance to technical and vocational training in the development efforts of the continent and also empowerment of women is a serious priority for us,” she explained.

Miss Ulueren reaffirmed Turkey’s support towards Ghana’s quest for inclusive, equitable and sustainable development and prosperity based on equal partnership and mutual respect.

She urged the trainees to take advantage of the opportunity provided to them to acquire industry related skills.

The Muslim Women in Teaching (MUSWIT), Ghana were to oversee the training of the young women in the Ablekuma Central Constituency.

Mr Boamah in his remarks committed GH¢10,000 to the training of women in Technical and Vocational Education and Training in his constituency.

According to him, about 50, women would be trained in Information Communication Technology (ICT), fashion and the production of detergents and local drinks.

Mr Boamah said the initiative would help decrease unemployment in the community significantly since the skills acquired by the women would help them venture into entrepreneurship.

“When we are able to train a lot of women and youth in the community, unemployment and other auxiliary challenges would be resolved so it’s my heart desire to support this institution in order to get the best out of it,” he said.

He urged them to adopt a proper maintenance culture to increase the lifespan of the equipment provided to them.

Mr Boamah hinted that his outfit would support and collaborate with the MUSWIT Ghana in other

initiative towards the development of the country.

The president of MUSWIT Ghana, Hajia Amina Deen Ibrahim, said the goal of the MUSWIT to contribute towards the development of women necessitated the decision to obtain sponsorship for establishing the TVET facility.

She explained that the women would be trained in dress making, ICT, the making of detergents and local drinks.

She hinted that plans were in place to obtain accreditation from the Ghana TVET service so that when the girls graduate from the centre, they would be able to further their training elsewhere.

She added that during their training the girls would be provided with counselling to help with their decision- making after their training.

She commended the Türkiye Diyanet Foundation for the initiative as it would provide the opportunity for women in the community to acquire industry- related skills.
