There was pandemonium at the Saint Peter’s Anglican Church premises, at Ofankor, in Accra, when the youth of the area attacked church members during last Sunday’schurch service.
The youth and the Anglican Church in the area are on a collision course over land in front of the church, which had been turned into a football field, by the youth.
Four of the youth have been arrested by the police in connection with the disturbances, the Mile ‘7’ District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Cliff AyehOfei, confirmed to them Ghanaian Times, in Accra, yesterday.
According to a source at Saint Peter’s Anglican Church, activities by the youth at the church premises were distracted, and efforts to stop them had proved futile.
The source said on several occasions, the church has been attacked by the youth, who barricaded the entrance of the church, preventing members from worshiping.
Those, who attempted to cross the barricade, had thewind screen of their cars smashed, and other properties on the compound destroyed.
The latest attack was last Sunday, when the youth were reported to have barricaded the church entrance with block, a source at the church told the Ghanaian Timesin Accra.
According to the source, since February 17, 2022 there had been series of attacks at the church premises by the youth, who used the place as a field.
When contacted, the Anglican Bishop of the Accra Diocese, Right Rev DrSylvanusTortor, stated the Diocese was aware of the issue and had informed the police about it.
He said the church, had also contacted the chief and elders of the area about the issue.
“There will also be a crunch meeting today by the leadership of the Diocese to discuss the problem,” Rt. Rev. Dr, Tortor.
The Chief of Ofankor, Nii Kortey Boi II, he was aware of the long-standing issue, and assured the public that the case would be resolved amicably, to bring peace.
The chief said he has called for a meeting between the church and elders to address the issue.
The Ghanaian Times gathered that the Church was established in 1960.
