Winnifred Ntumi on Wednesday night dazzled her way to represent the nation at next year’s XXII Commonwealth Games slated for Birmingham, England.
This followed her invigorating performance at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship in the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where she grabbed bronze.
Though thrilled by her feat that also saw her placing 11th in the world, Ms Ntumi hopes her performance would pave way for her to get hold of a permanent job.
“I’m more than excited for winning a medal at this event, but I pray to get a reliable job too to support this chosen sport,” she told the Times Sports yesterday in a chat.
Campaigning in the women’s 49kg bodyweight division, Ntumi garnered a total of 135kg lifts in the clean and jerk, adding two kilogrammes to her entry total of 132kg.
However, albeit she struck a place in Birmingham, her grand total was not strong enough to grant her a medal in the IWF Championship that was also running simultaneously.
Ghana’s other lifter, Sandra Mensimah Owusu, also placed an impressive fifth position in the women’s 55kg Group B category yesterday, but recorded enough points to qualify for the Commonwealth Games.
The two national team lifters were accompanied by their coach, Michael Abotsi, who lauded them for their “incredible piece of performance.”
