NSA condemns violence at league centres

The National Sports Authority (NSA), has condemned the acts of violence at some of the league centres during the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Normalisation Committee (NC) Special Competition.

The Nana Agyemang Badu I Sports Stadium and the Berekum Golden City Park have been banned by the GFA for acts of violence.

A statement signed by Mr. Charles Obeng Amofah, Ag, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the NSA said, it has learnt with shock the attacks and assaults on individuals during the match between Berekum Chelsea and Kumasi Asante Kotoko last Sunday in Berekum.

It said, the NSA condemns the barbaric act which generated gory images of persons assaulted and widely transmitted on some major social media platforms.

It advised the police, to arrest and prosecute culprits of these barbaric acts to serve as a deterrent to others and to bring decency to sports.

The statement said, “The Authority and relevant stakeholders would ensure that stiffer punishments including banning offenders from all football related activities are enacted to control such abhorrent behaviours”.

It said the Authority would work closely with the FA and the security agencies to safeguard life and property in subsequent matches.

Meanwhile, Professor Peter Twumasi, Director General of the NSA has said that research was an essential tool for the development and promotion of sports in the country.

Professor Twumasi, in an interview with the GNA Sports said, there was a huge reward for any modern organization that relies on true, scientific and unbiased assessment of situations and conditions through research to elicit relevant polices to steer the affairs of the organization.

He said plans were far advanced for the NSA to make sports research, a major point of focus in their quest to supervise and maintain sporting infrastructure, as well as develop athletes to perform at the highest level.

”The outcome of research activities in diverse sectors of our society and economy, which sports is part, would provide solutions and measures in the form of recommendations to policy makers, Government and stakeholders,” Prof. Twumasi added.

“The focus now is on developing neglected sporting disciplines to ensure greater participation of the citizenry in sports, with consequent impact on job creation, health improvement to reduce cost of healthcare,” he added.

Professor Twumasi, who was appointed the Director General for NSA in December 2018, has over fifty (50) research publications. –GNA
