NPP founding member urges level-playing field for primaries

Mr Isaac Kwabena Sarkodie Boahin, the only surviving founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Bono East Region, is calling for a level-playing field for all contestants in the party’s upcoming parliamentary and presidential primaries.

This, he explained, would ensure that the right persons would emerge as the party’s candidates for the next general election.

Mr Boahin told the media in an interview at Kintampo recently, that if the leadership of the party would be able to ensure fair play in the process, the presidential and parliamentary candidates would resonate well with the masses to ensure a resounding electoral victory in the 2024 elections.

On the delegates who will be voting, Mr Boahin advised them not to get carried away by monetary and other enticements by aspirants in making the right decision on the voting day.

“We should look out for someone who is very marketable and can secure us a resounding victory, landslide victory come 2024 as the NPP presidential candidate,” he said.

He also added, “the current situation where we have a hang parliament should be a wake-up call to the delegates to choose the right parliamentary candidates.

To have a clear majority in parliament, I will appeal to delegates to select people who are capable of winning their respective parliamentary seats for the party. That’s the most important thing.”

Mr Boahin, who is the former Kintampo constituency secretary and NPP parliamentary candidate for Kintampo North in the 2004 elections cautioned against the practice where some parliamentary aspirants camp delegates in hotels for days and weeks prior to primaries.

“I think one issue that the leadership of the party should keep an eye on is the camping of delegates by some aspirants in hotels with the view to induce them to get their votes.

I think this should be stopped as it breeds corruption and encourages monetisation of the election process and we should guard against it,” he stated.
