NPP calls on NDC leadership to expel Suame Youth Organiser over inciting language

The Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Richard Ahiagba on Wednesday urged the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to expel its Suame Youth Organiser, Razak Koampa for inciting political violence.

Mr Koampa has been spotted in a video which has been widely circulated on the internet, inciting NDC members to ensure all NPP members are attacked during the 2024 general elections.

However, addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, Mr Ahiagbah stated that condoning hate speeches could affect the peace and tranquility in the country, adding that authorities must ensure Mr Koampa faced the full wrath of the law.

“We will not discount this as vain talk because this individual is coherent and clearly appears to know and understand what he is saying and what outcome he expects.”

“We believe this NDC Youth Organiser did not speak in isolation or misspoke. He is clear-eyed. His remarks reflect the culture and ethos of the NDC. We expect the police and the courts to bring this Suame NDC Youth to Justice very quickly to deter others who might be harboring similar violent thoughts in the NDC,” he added.

He also called on the public to disregard any activity that sought to promote chaos, saying disturbances and hatred negatively affected development and must not be discouraged at all levels.

He said the laws of the country must act strongly when it comes to issues that have the tendency of marring the peace of the country, especially with the case of Mr Koampa to serve as a deterrent to others.

Touching on government’s Gold for Oil programme designed to ease the constant pressure on the cedi and help lower the price of petroleum products for Ghanaians, the Director of Communication indicated that the initiative would have positive economic implications “because a stable cedi means stable prices and a lower cost of living so individuals criticising it must stop.”

He commended Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and all the agencies working to implement the policy, saying the NPP recognises their tireless efforts.

Explaining, Mr Ahiagbah said there were two modes of transacting under the Gold for Oil programme which are barter and broker.

Under the barter channel, he said the Bank of Ghana (BoG) would provide an equivalent volume of gold to suppliers willing to accept gold in direct exchange for petroleum products.

The bank and the International Oil Trading Companies (IOTCs), he said, must open Gold Metal Accounts in a mutually agreed-upon gold refinery for the gold transfer.

However with the border channel, the BoG would enter a gold supply agreement in which it sells gold to a gold broker for forex cover to pay for petroleum products.

“The gold broker then purchases gold and deposits the proceeds in the gold holding account at Bank of Ghana. On receipt of the final invoice from Bulk Oil Distribution and Transport (BOST), the BoG then transfers the funds from a gold holding account to an Escrow Account to pay for the petroleum product shipment,” he added.

He therefore, urged the public to disregard all negative stories being circulated by the opposition about the Oil for Gold programme and rather support the government to do more for Ghana.
