Residents in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region who had earlier planned to celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day in grand style were disappointed as they were unable to celebrate due to a warning from the police.
The police, prior to the day, issued statement banning the celebration of the event which was scheduled to have come off on Sunday, February 14, 2021.
When the Ghanaian Times reporter visited public places such as the Black Star Hotel, Blue Sky Hotel, Jocom Lodge, Vea Dam, Soul Train, Tap Hotel, Akayet Hotel, Atula Hotel, and Commci Commca Hotel, as well as the 24 Hours/Akolbila Bar; Racla Spot, Dady’s Pub and Yoggis Pub, where the annual event is usually organised in grand style, the usual crowd, music and dancing which often characterised the event were missing.
Speaking to the Upper East Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) David Fianko-Okyere, on Monday, he explained that the police had a hint that “most spots and public places, including the hotels in the Bolgatanga municipality, had planned to organise the event in a grand style.”
“Sensing that the planned event was likely to attract a greater number of people contrary to the executive order of the President in view of COVID-19, limiting number of persons to 25 for funeral and other occasions, the Police Command decided to issue the warning banning the organisation of the planned event,” he indicated.
The PRO, who commended the management of the facilities for adhering strictly to the police caution on the COVID-19 protocols, stated that the police would continue to enforce the President’s COVID-19 directives and would not spare anybody caught violating them.
