No disability friendly water closet toilet at Adaklu SHS — Headmaster

Contrary to the recent claims by the Minister of Special Development Initiatives, Mavis Hawa Koomson that the Adaklu Senior High School has been provided with a 20-seater disability friendly water closet toilet under the One Million Dollars per Constituency scheme, no such facility exists on the campus.

This came to light when the Ghanaian Times visited the school as part of a two-week tour of the Adaklu District.

Journalists from other media houses also visited the school together with Ghanaian Times on March 9, this year to ascertain the minister’s claims.

The headmaster of the school, Mr Bartholomew Kudzo Hosu said: “If a facility like that exists at the school then I have never seen it before.”

He, however, said that he was not happy talking to the media and then referred the team to the District Director of Education, Mr Francis Agbemadi, as the competent authority to comment on the issue.

Mr Agbemadi who later met the media in the office of the DCE, Mr Donkor Kadey, confirmed that the school had not benefitted from any facility of that nature.

That was corroborated by the DCE who explained that the contracts for such projects were awarded in the Accra, and so “we cannot give you the contract details here.”

According to the Mr Kadey, efforts were rather underway to construct a 10-seater toilet for the male students and a similar one for the female students at the school.

Meanwhile, the 10-seater water closet institutional toilets with boreholes which the minster cited as monumental manifestations of projects under the disbursements of the funds under the One Million Dollar per Constituency plan at Adaklu-Waya and other communities in the constituency do not exist.

At Adaklu-Waya, for instance, a public toilet project is being undertaken by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO).

“We still use the old 10-squatter toilet,” said Togbe Amafu, Regent of Waya.

Similarly, Adaklu-Dawanu has not been provided with a community-based mechanised solar-powered water system.

What the Ghanaian Times saw was a dried-up water reservoir installed in the community in April, 2018, by the Swiss Angels Foundation.

Several attempts by the Ghanaian Times to contact the MP for the area, Mr Kwame Agbodza on phone for his comments did not succeed.
