The National Chairman aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Armah Ashietey, has signed the book of condolence opened in memory of Queen Elizabeth II at the British High Commission in Accra.
Signing the book, the NDC Chairman-Hopeful prayed for the family in Buckingham Palace, the people of England, United Kingdom and the Commonwealth saying “Queen Elizabeth II lived a very modest and admirable life, and was loved by all and sundry.”
He recounted how the Late Queen visited Ghana in 1999 when he was the Mayor of Tema Metropolitan Assembly, saying the Queen together with Late President Jerry John Rawlings visited Tema to set up the millennium celebrations.
The millennium celebrations was a worldwide, coordinated series of events to celebrate and commemorate the end of 1999 and the start of the year 2000.
He said during the visit, Tema Metropolitan Assembly was chaired by a 28 member committees which was a non-partisan affair and planted 200 customised corporate trees along the Meridian near the Tema Port.
“All trees planted have their names recorded in the Tema millennium register which I believe can be traced at the Metropolitan Assembly. Commonwealth and the world will miss the leadership of the Queen which I believe that, other world leaders will emulate her gesture to change society and mankind,” he added.
Nii Ashietey wished King Charles III the best as he takes the reigns, and urged him to keep the good relations that England had established.
He used the opportunity to announce his intention to lead the NDC chairmanship position, and declared that he would be the first to pick up nomination forms when nominations opened.
“NDC stand a chance of winning the 2024 general election but it will not be an easy task therefore the party need a dedicated, loyal and hardworking national chairman to see to it that collation of elections results is done at all cost,” he said.
The British High Commissioner, Harriet Thompson, expressed gratitude to Nii Ashietey, Ghanaians and the people from the rest of the world for the show of love and support during such a time, saying “we appreciate you being an important part of this historic moment.”
