New Juaben South EHD confiscates unwholesome goods in Koforidua

The Environmental Health Department (EHD) of the New Juaben South Municipality, in the Eastern Region,  has confiscated food items, drinks and drugs that have expired from some traders in Koforidua.

The items, include tins of milk, canned tomato paste, soft and alcoholic beverages, biscuits, baby products, and drugs, that have 2017 as the expiry date.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of New Juaben South, Mr Isaac Appaw Gyasi, who disclosed these to journalists, said offenders would be reported to the law enforcement agencies, for investigations and  prosecution to take place.

He expressed worry that some traders were flooding the market with expired goods to outwit unsuspecting customers, who were rushing to the market to buy goods for the Christmas festivities.

Mr Gyasi said, “Christmas is approaching and I would ensure the personnel from the Environmental Health Department to check goods on the market”, assuring that that the department would continue to check goods sold on the market to ensure that only wholesome goods are sold to customers.

He cautioned the public not to be carried away by Christmas, and should ensure that they check the expiry dates of food items, drinks and drugs that they would buy.

The Municipal Environment and Health Officer of New Juaben South Municipality, Mr Emmanuel Tetteh, said that some traders hid unwholesome goods from personnel of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) who go round to ensure that only wholesome goods are sold to the public.

“Thinking that the FDA had finished their work, they decided to bring the expired goods back to the shelves without knowing we would also come around,” he said.

He stated that the department would continue to be on the look out to check that traders desist from selling expired products.
