The National Democratic Congress (NDC) yesterday begun its regional election conferences nationwide for various positions to steer the affairs of the party towards the next national elections.
The positions include chairman and vice chairman, secretary, deputy secretary, organiser, deputy organiser, treasurer, deputy treasurer, communications officer, deputy communications officer, women’s organiser, deputy women’s organiser, Zongo caucus coordinator, youth organiser and deputy youth organiser.
About 712 candidates will be contesting the various positions and a keen contest is anticipated from Friday November 11 to Sunday November 13, 2022 with elections of the women’s organiser, deputy women’s organiser, youth organiser and deputy youth organizer. Delegates are expected to fully abide by all laid down rules and regulations outlined.
In terms of security arrangements, logistics and venues; for the regional contests in the regions where the elections would come off, the party has made the necessary arrangements towards peaceful and successful elections, a precursor to the national delegates congress slated for December 17, 2022 and also for its presidential primary next year to elect a flag bearer for the 2024 general election.
The Electoral Commission (EC) will supervise the polls, and 300,000 delegates, comprising constituency and regional executives, as well as former government appointees, are expected to cast their votes in the elections however, elections have been suspended in the Bono East and Ahafo regions while in the Eastern Region, only the women and youth organiser elections will come off as scheduled.
A statement signed and issued by Daniel Amartey Mensah, Deputy Director of Elections, NDCsaid all was set in terms of security arrangements, logistics and venues, for the regional contests.
It said the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dissolved the Bono East Regional Elections Committee with immediate effect and put the region’s executives’ elections on hold and the decision comes months after police arrested five people in connection with the attack on the Bono East NDC party office at Techiman on July 28.
Three regional chairmen, Kwadwo Nyamekye Marfo, Bono Region; Alhaji Abdulai Mumuni Bolnaba, Upper East Region, and Alhaji Seidu Imoro, Savannah Region are going unopposed.
NDC delegates in the Greater Accra Region will vote for the positions of youth organiser and women’s organiser, continue on Sunday where delegates will elect a new chairman, secretary, and organiser among others and three people will be challenging the incumbent chairman of the party, Ade Coker.
In Greater Accra, the three include a former Member of Parliament for Adentan, Nii Ashie Moore, a former parliamentary aspirant for Ningo Prampram, Michael Kwetey Tetteh and Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser, Thomas Mustapha Ashong.
In the Western Region, 50 persons are enthusiastically vying for 20 positions, in the Northern Region, several incumbent executives are seeking re-election includes the Regional Secretary, Mohammed Abdul Salam, Youth Organiser, Karim Abdul Mumin and Regional Organiser Abubakari Abdallah Baba have all submitted forms to contest the elections.
