NCPD calls for partnership to develop para sports

Ahead of this year’s Ghana National Wheelchair Softball Championship in Kumasi, Wheelchair Softball officials from the United States of America (USA) and Japan have paid a courtesy call on Madam Esther Akua Gyamfi, Executive Secretary of the National Council on Person’s with Disability (NCPD).

The delegation made up of an official from the USA and two officials from Japan, with six officials from the Ghana Wheelchair Softball Federation were received at the Office of the Executive Secretary in the company of some staff of the Council.

Madam Akua Gyamfi who was delighted briefed them about the work and role of the council as an agency that advises government and implement policies of disability issues in Ghana.

She said, the council would make sure all articles in the Disability Act 715 of Ghana and the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disability was given the needed attention under her watch, in addition to sports and recreation for persons with disability.

Mr Jeff Downs from USA, who is the head of the delegation, was grateful to the Executive Secretary and her staff for the reception accorded them on their arrival at the council.

He assured the Executive Secretary of their willingness to develop wheelchair soft ball in the country.

Mr Downs said, they were in the Country to observe the national games and as well offer some technical training for the handlers of wheelchair soft ball in Ghana as a first step.

He said they would also gather first-hand information about how far the game had gone in the country with regards to its development to enable them come up with the best strategy and support to help the game grow in the country. –GNA
