…MMDAs undertake massive disinfection of city’s major markets

A massive disinfection exercise of markets, lorry stations and drains to promote a healthy environment for trade and business ended in Accra yesterday.

About 120 markets and lorry stations including Mallam Atta, Nima, Maamobi, Jamestown, and Madina markets were sprayed to make them habitable for use.

The exercise took place in all the 29 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Greater Accra Region.

It was undertaken by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) in collaboration with Zoom Alliance Waste Limited, a leading waste management company in Ghana.

The usual blistering and tooting from cars, hissing and clapping by market women to call customers were missing yesterday as shops and others remained locked.

In an interview with the Ghanaian Times, Mr Aboagye Jonathan, a member of the communication team, MLGRD said the government was committed to creating a good environment for trade and businesses to flourish.

When asked if the exercise would take place in other regions, he said the team would evaluate the progress of this one before it decides the next line of action.

Mr Jonathan advised Ghanaians to practise personal hygiene and observe World Health Organisation (WHO)’s protocols, thus observing social distance to avert contracting the coronavirus (COVID-19) disease.

He urged the media to support the cause of educating Ghanaians on the virus.

Mr Francis Bonney, a driver at the Kaneshie-Takoradi Transport Union appealed to the various political parties to desist from politicising the issue.
