Military restores calm to Maame Krobo

The military personnel deployed to the Maame Krobo, in the Afram Plains South District of the Eastern region, says they have restored calm to the area and urged residents to go about their daily activities without fear.

The armed troops were airlifted last Friday to join their counterparts already in the area, following intelligence that the people were planning a reprisal attack due to alleged murder of a resident by a nomadic herdsman.

A military source, speaking with the Ghanaian Times in a telephone interview in Accra, yesterday, said “based on the information, we quickly dispatched our personnel on Friday, and followed that up with another batch to beef up their strength at the weekend.”

The personnel are currently patrolling the streets of Maame Krobo, where the incident led to the burning of some houses and properties belonging to nomadic herdsmen in the Zongo community.

The source said the early intervention from military personnel, prevented the incident from escalating, adding that “on Friday evening, the military and police managed to convey the nomadic herdsmen from Mame Krobo to Donkokrom, to prevent reprisal attacks.”

“The allegation of nomadic herdsmen with their cattle grazing on the farms of the locals had been a perennial thing for which the military introduced what has become known “Operation Cow Leg” to calm the situation anytime allegations come up, “ the military source stated.

The military source meanwhile reassured the people of Maame Krobo area of peace and safety, and that any person, who would cause trouble in the area would be dealt with.
