The electricity meters were intercepted at the Kumasi bus terminal at Aflao lorry station, and two suspects (names withheld) had been handed over to the Aflao District Police Command for interrogation.

Briefing the Ghanaian Times, at Aflao, on Tuesday, a soldier at the station, who pleaded anonymity, said military personnel intercepted the meters when the suspects were loading them into a VIP bus, bound for Kumasi, at Aflao.

Mr Emmanuel Lumor, General Manager of Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta, when contacted by the Ghanaian Times, said the company realised that “some people have been making frantic efforts to infiltrate our stable electricity distribution network with illegal meters”.

He said investigation by ECG revealed that some people without license under the Public Utility Act by the Energy Commission to possess or install electricity distribution meters, smuggle fake meters from Togo to Ghana.

Mr Lumor indicated that “We have found out that such people are selling meters at exorbitant fees to unsuspecting customers”.

He asked customers to report people who sell fake or substandard meters to the police.
