Memphis Metropolitan Construction has donated building materials and food items worth GH¢ 250,000 towards the reconstruction project and upkeep of flood victims at Akropong and Adubrim in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.
The items included 500 bags of cement, 100 packets of roofing sheets, 150 bags of rice, 200 bags of sachet water, 25 boxes of Abena Sardine, 25 boxes of Ena Pa tomato sauce, 50 boxes of Roch spaghetti, 50 boxes of Gino tomato mix, 50 sachets of Frytol oil and soft drinks.
On Saturday, June 18, Akropong and Adubrim farming communities were flooded when rivers including Nrenle, Sansena and Ntwabaka broke their banks during heavy rains, flooded households and rendered the main Asasetre- Gwira Banso road impassable.
Victims are temporarily being housed in churches and schools, awaiting the reconstruction and relocation project expected to begin soon.
Presenting the items on Monday, the Operations Manager of Memphis Metropolitan Construction, Mr Cephas Apenovor, said the company, which had worked in the Ellembelle District since 2014, had good relations with residents, and, therefore, decided to come to their aid.
“Our focus is on national development and we have worked with Ellembelle as a family, that is why, on behalf of the Director, Patrick Kwaku Danso, we are here to give back to Akropong and Adubrim communities, as part of our corporate social responsibility programmes. Indeed, we share your plight because we also lost materials worth GH¢60, 000, at site on the Esiama-Nkroful road during a recent flooding,” he added.
The District Chief Executive, Kwasi Bonzo, recalled that two weeks ago, floods hit the Akropong and Adubrom communities destroying about 560 households and causing untold suffering to the people, saying “it was serious disaster.”
He indicated that, the assembly provided initial clothing to the affected in the two areas, reiterating “I told you help would soon come and more are coming and UNHCR has also provided some mosquito nets and blankets.”
Mr Bonzo announced that, a technical committee comprising the physical planning and engineering department and a resident, would on Tuesday, visit various disaster sites to take measurements of houses for the preparation of the relocation project.
The Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who earlier toured the disaster sites, was happy that the communities had agreed to relocate to a hilly place to safeguard any future flooding in the area.
He assured that compensation would be paid to property owners at the new site, adding “each household would be supported with cement and roofing sheets.”
