Mediate EC, political parties impasse …Group petitions Peace Council

An organisation calling itself Good Governance Advocacy Group-Ghana (GGAG-G) has petitioned the National Peace Council (NPC) to intervene in the recent impasse between the Electoral Commission (EC) and some opposition political parties over the compilation of a new voters’ register before issues get out of hand.

“We call on the Peace Council to intervene in the recent impasse between the Electoral Commission and some opposition political parties over the compilation of a new voters’ register before issues escalate to destroy the peaceful democracy we are currently enjoying,” it noted.

The EC has taken an entrenched position to compile a new voters’ register despite opposition from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other parties kicking against plans by EC to resort to use of Ghana card and Passport as proof of citizenship for upcoming registration exercise billed to take place at end of June.

According to NDC and other opposition parties, many citizens will be disenfranchised if Ghana card and passport are accepted as only proof of citizenship, but EC stated a registered person can vouch for 10 people who do not have any of the two documents, which had created tension between EC and opposition parties.

The petition urged the Peace Council to intervene in recent happenings involving EC on one side and other stakeholders of elections on other side to resolve crux of all ensuing disagreement which was gradually degenerating into destruction of peace, stability, national cohesion and unity in the country which was about Election 2020, attempt by EC to compile a new voters’ register without satisfactory justification.

“We petition you to intermediate between all processes before, during and after election 2020 to help bridge gap of consensus building to avert any action that can trigger violence to jeopardise enviable peace, stability, national cohesion and unity we have enjoyed as Ghanaians in Fourth Republic.

“We also deem call of your organisation to nation saving duty, we embolden the Peace Council to take action now and stop procrastinating before issues degenerate and gets out of hand,” the petition said. -GNA
