Martisan Foundation to lead chiefs to 68th UN civil society confab

Martisans Sports and Cultural Foundation (MSCF), a non-governmental organisation based in Accra, will this year lead a delegation of chiefs to attend the 68th United Nations (UN) Civil Society Conference in the United States of America (USA).

The conference is slated for 26th and 27thAugust and it would take place in Salt Lake, Utah State.

Among the delegation who are mainly from the Greater Accra Region are Nii Tetteh Otu II, Paramount Chief of Kpone, Nii Boye Lumor Modza I, Gonti of the Nungua traditional area, Naa Adokailey Notse I Queen mother of Denchira, Naa Borley Konu, Queen mother of the Nungua traditional area and Mr Joshua  Nii Bortey, Municipal Chief Executive  (MCE) of the Krowo Municipal Assembly.

The President of the MSCF, Mr Desmond Kwame Mantey, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times, said the focus of this year’s conference was on the Sustainable Development Goal 11, and was on the theme, ‘Building inclusive and sustainable cities.’

He explained that the SDG 11 focused on how to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe and resilient, as well as sustainable by 2030.

“Against this backdrop, the MSCF’s aim is to further inform our traditional chiefs and local community leaders on the role they can play in bringing about community development in diverse ways to the communities in line with UN SDG 11 by 2030, and further work together to mobilise resources to implement the various initiatives the foundation plans to carry out in the various communities,” he said.

Mr Mantey said the foundation also hoped to broaden the network of chiefs with regards to community development by connecting them to various international development agencies and donors who supported community development in developing countries.

He said it was the intention of the MSFC to roll out advocacy and other outreach programmes targeted at the youth, girls and women in a bid to empower them, equip them with vital sporting and social skills as a means of facilitating community development in line with the SDGs.

Meanwhile, the MSFC had been commended by some members of the delegation for the initiative.
