Mandate of electorate will secure term of MMDCEs – Lawer Akrofi

Adzoteye Lawer Akrofi, the Ada West District Chief Executive, has observed that the Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) will be secured to take decisions without the fear of being sacked or suspended should they have the mandate of the electorate instead of appointment by the president.

‘The election of metropolitan municipal and district chief executives will empower us to decide in consultation with other stakeholders. Currently there is a lot of pressure on us which needs enough funds to run metropolitan municipal and district assemblies,” he noted.

Speaking at a Town Hall meeting on educating, sensitisation and creating awareness for the public at Sege on the upcoming Referendum and District Level Elections slated for December 17, 2019, Mr Akrofi said with traditional authorities and other stakeholders, the usage of the common fund to support and assist the communities just like the Members of Parliament (MPs) were doing with their common funds would make it flexible for them in their term of office.

“We have only the district assembly’s common fund, which is also given to us due to the amount of Internally Generated Funds, it means we the MMDCEs have little funds to attend to some of our problems and challenges as compared to MPs. We want you to help us to help the district and also secure our term of office.

“I appeal to the electorate to turnout in your numbers to vote “yes” for the referendum and vote for one person for the district assembly and five persons for the unit committee level on December 17, 2019, referendum because we have 40,000 eligible voters and what we should do is get 40 per cent of them to turn-out and vote while 75 per cent of the 40 per cent should vote yes, when you go to the polling stations vote yes,” Mr Akrofi stressed. -GNA
